UAE Adopts the 13th Edition of the Nice Classification for Trademark Registration (2026)
The United Arab Emirates has officially adopted the 13th Edition of the Nice Classification, effective 27 January 2026, marking an important update in the country’s trademark registration framework. The Nice Classification system, administered by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), categorizes goods and services into 45 distinct classes—34 for goods and 11 for services—to standardize trademark filings globally.
Under the updated framework, all new trademark applications submitted in the UAE must comply with the revised classification guidelines. The changes introduce updated descriptions and refined categories for certain goods and services, ensuring better alignment with global intellectual property standards.
For businesses operating in the UAE or planning to enter the market, this update highlights the importance of accurately identifying the relevant trademark classes when filing applications. Incorrect classification may lead to examination delays, additional queries from the authorities, or potential rejection of the application.
